Top 10 Tips- Safety Whilst Travelling Solo

  1. Research the area for potential threats- this can be general statistics related to crime rates, safety, morals and values to ensure you’re safe, respectful, comfortable and can fit in.
  2. Have your accommodation sorted before it gets dark- its very important to book accommodation before night time so you can ensure somewhere to stay, for your first night I would suggest always booking well in advance for peace of mind.
  3. Share your location and itinerary with your family and friends- a general tip so that they can check on you without having to call everyday.
  4. Lock up your valuables- investing in a money belt and carrying a small amount of money in a purse with the rest under your clothes makes you less of a target to thieves.
  5. Don’t tell strangers you’re travelling alone- this can make you an easy target to be taken advantage of.
  6. Trust your gut instincts for everything!
  7. Blend in as much as possible so you don’t look like a tourist- wearing similar clothing and learning some common phrases can provide a more authentic experience for you and not standing out as a target.
  8. Carry a small hairspray or mosquito spray- these items are easy and legal defence tools if you find yourself in a situation where you need to protect yourself.
  9. Invest in an alarm doorstop- these are about £10 on amazon and are perfect for hotels to put under the door while you sleep and make a loud sound if triggered.
  10. Buy an inside door lock- another safety item which prevents even key holders from gaining access to your room.

Coffee and Nostalgia…

Woke up this morning and sat in bed with a cup of coffee reminiscing about my trip to Thailand. It doesn’t feel like long ago, but it’s coming up to 2 years now! There are so many things i miss about being there. The ice coffee the locals made for us, waking up to a view of elephants bathing in the river and sitting on the terrace at 3am with the new people I’d met. I can’t begin to compare the supermarket instant coffee I’m drinking now on a student budget to the fresh Thai coffee beans blended with almond milk. After a long day of making elephant food, unloading watermelons from trucks and chopping down old banana tree plantations in 40 degree heat, there was nothing better than relaxing on the terrace with an ice coffee. It’s so interesting how different food and dinks taste when they haven’t been shipped thousands of miles across the world. That is one of the things I value the most about travelling, eating the food straight from the source. There’s nothing better than a fresh mango! Especially during these times, where we are restricted to staying in one country, I would give anything to be back in the jungle.

ABOUT ME

HI ALL! JUST WANTED TO INTRODUCE MYSELF! I’M EMILY, IM 19 AND IVE BEEN A SOLO TRAVELLER SINCE MY FIRST TRIP TO THE USA WHEN I WAS 15. SINCE THEN I HAVE LEARNT A LOT ABOUT HOW TO HAVE THE INSTAGRAMMABLE EXPERIENCES BUT AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER I SPENT MOST OF MY TIME WORKING 4 JOBS AND I DIDN’T HAVE MUCH TIME TO SOCIALISE BUT I HAD THIS URGE IN ME THAT MOTIVATED ME TO GET UP AT 6AM AND WORK UNTIL 11PM SO I COULD AFFORD TO SEE MORE OF THE WORLD FROM A TRAVELLERS PERSPECTIVE INSTEAD OF AS A TOURIST. I JUGGLED THESE JOBS ALONG SIDE EDUCATION WHICH WAS A CHALLENGE BUT SINCE COMING TO UNIVERSITY AND HAVING SUCH A QUIET SCHEDULE IVE REALISED HOW MUCH I LIKED BEING BUSY. HAVING SOMETHING TO OCCUPY MY MIND COMPARED TO THE DAYS I PEOPLE WATCH FROM MY WINDOW WHILE TRYING TO THINK OF WAYS I CAN TRAVEL DURING THE CORONAVIRUS TIMES. MY BUCKET LIST IS ENDLESS AND CONSISTS OF THE MOST COMMON LOCATIONS LIKE JAPAN AND LA ALL THE WAY DOWN TO TINY UNDISCOVERED ISLANDS, ONE OF WHICH BEING BONAIRE JUST OFF THE COAST OF VENEZUELA.

IN MY BLOG I WANT TO SHARE WITH THOSE SIMILAR TO MYSELF ALL THE THINGS I HAVE LEARNT WHETHER THAT’S RELATED TO SAFETY WHEN TRAVELLING ALONE OR EVEN JUST WHAT TO PACK BUT I ALSO WANTED A PLACE TO WRITE DOWN ALL THE STORYS I HAVE AND MEMORIES I MADE WHICH MIGHT INSPIRE OTHERS TO WANT TO SEE THE WORLD TOO.
